Pembroke has a strong sporting tradition and there are many sports played at the college level, from rowing, hockey and rugby to cricket and croquet. Most teams combine undergraduates and graduates to ensure we are competitive.
The MCR football (soccer) team competes in the university MCR tournament. The 'Smurfs', despite the name, are a serious and competitive team. We make a point of training rookies to the sport every year to ensure that we have a constant source of on-field leaders. Jamie Tromans is this year's Smurfs Captain, or "Pappa Smurf" as we like to call him.
The MCR 'Punishers' Cricket team competes against other MCR's in the university. The hybrid international style of this team ensures a certain competitive edge over many mostly-British Colleges, not to mention the Pembroke SCR. There are few more Oxford experiences that playing cricket on Pembroke's tree-lined field. New bowlers and batsmen are always welcome!
DIRECTIONS TO OUR SPORTS GROUNDS
The Pembroke sports grounds are ten minutes walk from college. The easiest route is to head down St Aldates, straight over Folly Bridge onto Abingdon Road. Turn right into White House Road (with the Folly Bridge Inn on the corner), go straight over at the crossroads and follow the gravel track next to the adventure playground. At the end of the track, go over the railway bridge, and the Pembroke grounds will be on your left. There is a squash court, tennis court, football, cricket pitches and a rugby field.
