About the MCR

'Middle Common Room' (MCR) refers to both the community of Pembroke's post-graduates as an autonomous society within the College, and also to the facilities that society occupies within the Pembroke College grounds. These two components of the MCR exist symbiotically; without the MCR community, the MCR facilities would only be a group of empty - though beautiful - rooms, and, without the facilities, the community would not have the common home that those rooms provide. The following pages are intended to give a sense of these two aspects of the MCR, and how they contribute to the Pembroke Experience.

As the phrase 'Pembroke Experience' suggests, it would be impossible to encapsulate the MCR within these pages. Similarly, the MCR cannot be limited simply to the current members and its facilities. The rooms that the MCR are proud to call 'home' and the traditions the community uphold are indicative of a broader ideal, a pervasive philosophy that influences everything within this unique community. The 'work hard, play hard' mentality of Pembroke's MCR is evident in everything from its strong academic role within the College to its commitment to the constant improvement and enhancement of its facilities. Therefore, every facet of the MCR reflects that governing ethos; everything is for the students and by the students, encouraging a devotion and intensity of participation that makes Pembroke's MCR among the most active and engaged of Oxford's post-graduate communities.
